Thank you for the suggestions. These are some interesting ideas and ones I'll consider designing into the software. In the meantime, there is an easy way to add a new event, and that's by hovering the mouse over the desired date or timeslot until a "Click to add event" button appears. Click the button, type in the event title, and you're done.

Granted, if you want to adjust the event time, category, or reminder information to use values other than the defaults configured for the calendar, you'll have some additional steps, but I think those would be required no matter how the event is initially created. FYI, you can configure default settings for new events by double-clicking the calendar's name and entering the desired defaults (reminder, category, time, etc) on the Event Defaults tab.
